Before we get to that, lets understand a little bit about your abdominal muscles.
Your abdominals are made up of both the rectus abdominis and the lateral abdominal muscles (transversus abdominis, internal obliques and external obliques). All the muscles in this group have their own specific function, although only one will gives you the six pack looks, which is your rectus abdominis. However do not overlook the importance of the other muscles, as the lateral abdominal muscles are very important especially in supporting your spine and maintaining your lower back. Now you woudn’t want to break your back while getting in shape, do you?
Although not possible to train each of these group separately, any abdominal workout should benefit this group as a whole, just pick a different variety of exercises that work at different angles of the abs.
What you also need to know about abs is that if you have a layer of fat covering them at your stomach, chances are no matter how hard you train with lower ab workouts, you’re not going to see them soon. Therefore get rid of that layer of fats 1st before moving on to lower abdominal exercises! Also note, you can not ever turn those fats into muscles, only way is to get rid of them!
